Preventions

Fleas and ticks can be found indoors and outdoors. They can easily be carried in on your shoes and clothing, transferring them to your pets indoors. Indiana is a high-risk state for ticks year-round. Ticks love to find their way indoors when cold weather comes. The most common tick is the American Dog Tick, however, there are different species of ticks that thrive in Indiana. Ticks cause Lyme disease, which affects the joints in dogs. Flea rapidly reproduce, causing infestations that lead to anemia, itching, and discomfort in your animals. Fleas and ticks can also be transmitted to humans.

Heartworms and intestinal parasites are found feeding on the large arteries and blood vessels around the heart. This decreases blood and oxygen flow through the body. They are transmitted by mosquitos. One bite from a mosquito can easily infect the dog with worm eggs. Treatments are available for heartworm disease but can be expensive. It is best to prevent all year-round.

Bravecto

Bravecto is a 3-month chewable for dogs that protects against adult fleas and ticks. For 12 weeks, it prevents against Black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, and Brown dog ticks. For additional coverage, it protects against lone star ticks for 8 weeks. Bravecto is for dogs at least 6 months of age or weighing 4.4 lbs and greater.

Interceptor Plus

Interceptor is a 1-month chewable for dogs that protects against heartworm disease and intestinal parasites including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. This can be used for dogs at least 6 weeks of age and 2 lbs or greater.

Revolution Plus

Revolution is a 1-month topical solution for cats that kills fleas before they lay eggs, kills ticks for a month, prevents heartworm disease, and treats and controls ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms. This can be used for cats at least 8 weeks of age and weighing 2.8 lbs or greater.

Nexgard

Nexgard is a 1-month chewable for dogs that protects against adult fleas and ticks. For 4 weeks, it prevents against Black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, and Brown dog ticks. For additional coverage, it protects against lone star ticks for 8 weeks. Nexgard is for dogs at least 8 weeks of age and weighing 4 lbs or greater.

Heartgard Plus

Heartgard is a 1-month chewable for dogs that protects against heartworm disease. It also treats and controls roundworm and hookworm infections. This can bee used for dogs at least 6 weeks of age.
